Common dab  fish (lat. Limanda limanda) is a fish of the flounder family.

Where can you find common dab in Russia? On the territory of Russia, the common dab lives in the Gulf of Finland, the Barents and White Seas, and the common dab eel is especially common in the Onega and Kandalaksha bays.

In general, the common dab fish is found along the shores of the North Atlantic; to the west, the common dab fish's range reaches Iceland. To the south, the common dab eel is found as far as the Bay of Biscay. Common dab fish is found off the Faroe Islands, along the coasts of Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Ireland, and in the English Channel. The common dab fish lives in the Baltic Sea.

What does common dab look like? A distinctive feature of the common dab fish is the lateral line with a bend above the pectoral fin. The average length of the common dab ling reaches 20-30 cm, sometimes the common dab ling grows to a size of 40 cm. The maximum recorded body weight of the common dab ling is 1 kg, but common dab weighing 150-300 grams is usually found.

The coloring of the eye side of the common dab fish is sandy-brown, with darker spots. Because of the scales, this side of the fish is rough. The underside of the common dab 's body is white, rough only at the edges.

What is the habitat of common dab? The common dab fish is a bottom-dwelling fish that lives in the coastal zone at shallow depths, no deeper than 50-70 m. During spawning, which lasts from January to August, depending on the region, in the White Sea the spawning of the common dab  fish takes place from July to August, in the North Sea Common dab spawning takes place in February - March, the common dab fish moves closer to the shore, to depths of 25-50 meters. Common dab grass migrates.

The common dab fish lives mainly in highly salty waters and the common dab fish is rarely found at the mouth of a river or in highly desalinated waters, unlike the glossa.

How does Common dab spawn? Sexual maturity in the common dab fish occurs at 3–4 years of age. The common dab fish is quite prolific. The fertility of the common dab fish reaches 80-140 thousand eggs, the diameter of the eggs is 0.7-1 mm. Spawning takes place in the bottom horizons of deep-sea depressions. Caviar develops normally at a salinity of 12-13 ppm. Symmetrical larvae emerge from the eggs; the eggs and larvae develop in the near-surface layer, then settle at a depth of 10-20 meters and switch to a bottom lifestyle even before acquiring an asymmetrical body shape.

However, the common dab  fish is considered one of the objects that can contribute to the growth of coastal fisheries in the White Sea and, accordingly, increase its productivity. For the countries of Western and Northern Europe, common dab is a valuable commercial fish.
